Adversarial Delegation

A personal AI agent is given your inbox and profile to help you. We measure how that same access shifts its recommendations by the wealth it infers.

One request. Two prices.

Both users typed the same request. Only the agent on the right could read the user's inbox and profile.

The term

Adversarial delegation

We introduce adversarial delegation: when a user delegates a task to a personal AI agent and grants it access to personal context, the agent uses that context against the user's stated interest — here, pricing recommendations to the wealth it infers instead of following the request.

It is the first failure mode we catalog under AI economic misalignment: cases where an AI system's economic behavior diverges from the interests of the person it acts for.

Figures from the paper

Four figures

Redrawn from the paper's values. They show where the gap comes from, how little context triggers it, that it holds under an explicit "cheapest," and how it varies by model.

Price gap by stated intent (flights, in-context). Each bar is the low-income recommendation; the darker extension is the additional amount quoted to the wealthy persona. The gap remains under the explicit "cheapest" intent.
Blocking the financial attribute drives the change. Percentage change in the gap when one attribute is blocked, versus full access. Blocking financial (top row) moves the gap toward zero or reverses it; blocking the other attributes leaves it unchanged or increases it.
The gap appears after two emails. Flights gap across the access ladder. It peaks after two readable emails, then declines as more context is added — driven by inferred wealth rather than explicit disclosure.
Capability does not reduce the effect. Financial-axis retrieval rate against steering strength (mean Cohen's d) across all thirteen models. Retrieval rate does not predict effect size; the largest effect occurs in Claude Opus 4.8.

Results from the paper

Thirteen models, three economic domains

325,000 controlled trials across thirteen models and three economic domains, with prices and requests held fixed. Each cell is the discrimination gap Δ — mean recommended price for financially high personas minus that for low personas making the identical request.
